Compulsory Basic Training
A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) motorcycle lesson is a mandatory training course for new motorcyclists in the UK. It is designed to teach the essential skills and knowledge needed to ride a moped or motorcycle safely on public roads. The course includes five key sections
1. Introduction and eyesight check - Overview of the course and safety briefing.
2. On-site training - Learning motorcycle controls, starting and stopping, and basic handling skills in a safe, off-road environment.
3. Practical on-site riding - Practicing maneuvers such as turning, braking, and using gears if applicable.
4. Road training - Covering rules of the road, awareness, and safe riding techniques.
5. Practical on-road riding - Supervised riding on public roads to apply learned skills in real-world situations.
Upon successful completion, the rider is issued a CBT certificate, which allows them to ride up to a 125cc motorcycle (or a moped if under 17) with L-plates for up to two years.
